The story of Barrete Saloio
Barrete Saloio runs in the house Frutuoso Inácio bought in 1929, which his daughter, “Avó” Fernanda, later restored. Almost a century on, it still serves the saloio country cooking that brought people from Lisbon to Bucelas.
1929: Frutuoso Inácio’s tavern
For some years the building belonged to M. Machado da Costa. In 1929 Frutuoso Inácio bought it, together with a tavern, a grocery and a sausage shop.
The business grew into an eating house and inn called Casa de Pasto e Pensão de Frutuoso Inácio. People came from Lisbon for the good food, the good wine and the country air. It was the oldest inn in Bucelas.
“Avó” Fernanda
Maria Fernanda Inácio Viola, known as “Avó” Fernanda, the owner’s daughter, was born and raised in this house. She kept it going and, with her husband João Maria Viola, restored the building and turned it into Barrete Saloio.
The tavern became a café and pastry shop, the eating house a bar, the pig-slaughtering room the restaurant, and the coach house a large kitchen. The Toucinho do Céu on the menu is named after her.
The dining room
The decor is old-fashioned, with clay pots and ironwork from another age. There is a saloio porch, a window full of flowers and walls covered in blue tiles. On cold winter nights the fire is lit.
Bucelas, home of Arinto
Bucelas is a town in the Loures municipality, known for its Arinto white wine and its demarcated wine region. Barrete Saloio is on the Bucelas, Carcavelos and Colares wine route and is recommended by the Lines of Torres historic route.
